It is exactly two months today, after the Federal University
of Technology, Owerri(FUTO) inducted its first step of Optometrists. In the event
that took place on December, 16th, 2014 at FUTO Hall of Excellence, the Ag.Registrar
of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of
Nigeria(ODORBN), Dr. Igbo Okafor congratulated the new Doctors of Optometry and
hailed their entry into the profession of optometry in Nigeria, which was
possible after a minimum of six years of intensive academic and clinical
activities.
Dr Okafor emphasized that the board will strive to ensure
that that the standard of training in Nigerian Optometry schools is high and
encourage the schools to stay abreast with international standards.
The Registrar called on the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management to sponsor a reasonable number of optometry lecturers on in-service training programmes for higher education in specialty areas of optometry.
Encomiums were showered on the Head of Department of
Optometry, Dr.Emma Esenwah and the Vice-Chancellor of FUTO, Prof. C. C.
Asiabaka for their untiring efforts.
The Dean of the School of Health Technology, FUTO, Prof.
I.N.S. Dozie hailed Dr. Esenwah as he said, "you have passes through turbulent
times and you have been approved to be a worthy head of department."
According to the HOD, Dr.Esenwah the Optometry building was completed
within a year(2011-2012) and had taken delivery of new sets of the state of the arts equipment
worth millions of naira just a few months after.
FUTO, located in South-East, Nigeria had previously offered Optometry Technology as a course, a
development that generated a lot of controversy. But the course was later upgraded
to Optometry which awards Doctor of Optometry as degree
OPTOMETRY EXCELLENCE wishes the newly inducted Optometrists,
success as they embark on or strive to get places for their internship
programme. We also urge senior Optometrists to open their arms in welcome to these new and eager Optometrists.
